Whether they come from harness or flat racing, ex-racehorses start <strong>very young<\/strong> and often have an intense training regime to be the best. That means the horse comes with <strong>significant baggage<\/strong>.<br><strong>Speed, courage, determination and obedience<\/strong> are the main qualities sought in racehorses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once they <strong>retire from racing<\/strong>, they commonly start a new chapter in their lives. They are taken in <strong>by specialist facilities<\/strong> or associations that retrain them to help them find new homes. <br><br>Here are a <strong>few examples of associations<\/strong> that specialise in retraining racehorses :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audeladespistes.fr\/Home\/Index\/EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Association Au-del\u00e0 des Pistes<\/a> : Set up in 2016, this association<strong>works with<\/strong> <strong>thoroughbreds<\/strong>. Its goal is to showcase the horses&#8217; abilities and versatility after their racing careers. The association also<strong>informs<\/strong> the general public about the potential of these horses.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federationreconversion.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Fran\u00e7aise de la Reconversion<\/a> : This is a group of <strong>equestrian professionals<\/strong> working for ex-racehorses. They help horses with a <strong>tailored programme<\/strong> to find a fresh start away from the racecourse.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.passerelle-trotteurs.fr\/fr\/accueil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Passerelle Association <\/a>: Formed in 2020, Passarelle is one of <strong>two official<\/strong> <strong>associations<\/strong> to <strong>retrain French harness-racing horses<\/strong>. Their efforts help provide a new life for the horses where they are happy and well looked after.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Horse welfare<\/strong> is the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnch.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FNCH&#8217;s &#8211; F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Nationale des Courses Hippiques<\/a> uppermost concern. That&#8217;s why they have introduced a process called <strong>Race and Care<\/strong> to campaign for equine welfare in the equestrian sector.<br>In 2023, FNCH held <strong>76 day-long events dedicated to this groundbreaking programme<\/strong>. FNCH&#8217;s goal is to encourage those in the equestrian industry to uphold their<strong>commitment to the welfare of racehorses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked our<a href=\"https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/en\/antares-riders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antar\u00e8s rider, Jean-Bernard Eyquem <\/a>for some tips to ensure ex-racehorses stay healthy and happy:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" src=\"https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Jean-Bernard-Eyquem.jpg\" alt=\"Jean Bernard Eyquem\" class=\"wp-image-110489\" style=\"width:468px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Jean-Bernard-Eyquem.jpg 700w, https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Jean-Bernard-Eyquem-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><br><em>\u00ab To successfully retrain a racehorse, you first need to take time to see when it is happy.<br>Based on the answers the horse gives you, patience is the watchword for its entire retraining programme.<br>Of course, all horses have a right to a happy life but ex-racehorses deserve it a bit more ! \u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, they do have to learn the<strong> rules of being a &#8216;saddle horse&#8217;<\/strong>. As such, retraining them is <strong>long<\/strong> and <strong>packed with information to take in<\/strong>. Yet, if the rider is <strong>patient, well-prepared <\/strong>and has a <strong>can-do attitude<\/strong>, ex-racehorses <strong>can surprise you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"taking-good-care\">Keeping an ex-racehorse healthy and happy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like all horses, in general, keep a <strong>close eye on their health<\/strong>. Even so, ex-racehorses need <strong>special attention<\/strong> when retraining them<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here <strong>are some points to check<\/strong> to keep your ex-racehorse in <strong>good shape<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"#physical\">Physical and mental state<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"balanced-diet\"><a href=\"#balanced-diet\">A balanced diet suited to its metabolism<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"healthy-environment\"><a href=\"#healthy-environment\">A healthy environment in which it can thrive<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"#right-horse\">The right horse tack<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"physical\">Physical and mental state<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"balanced-diet\">When a racehorse is <strong>prematurely retired<\/strong> from racing, for whatever reason, its <strong>overall health<\/strong> <strong>needs to be checked.<\/strong><br>Its condition depends on its past history and the physical exertion when it was racing. Regular <strong>veterinary care <\/strong>and the right <strong>exercise programme<\/strong> are key to sustaining its physical and mental health.<br><strong>Emotions<\/strong> and <strong>behaviour<\/strong> are equally important in an ex-racehorse retraining programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"balanced-diet\">A balanced and suitable diet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"healthy-environment\">The choice of <strong>personalised<\/strong> diets depends on the <strong>physical transformation<\/strong> to come. When they train, racehorses are used to eating huge amounts of <strong>calorie-rich<\/strong> foods. Once a horse starts a retraining programme, it doesn&#8217;t have the same requirements. That&#8217;s why you must readjust its diet.<br>If, for example racehorses are fed oats, this can be replaced with fibre to loosen up the horse and make a <strong>smooth and steady change to its diet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"healthy-environment\">A healthy environment in which it can thrive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every horse takes time to <strong>get used to its new surroundings<\/strong>, spending time in the paddock day and night for those horses that can do this.<br>You have to let your horse adjust and get used to its new life. Fanatical about riding but mostly about<strong>horse&#8217;s themselves<\/strong>, she dreamt one day of having <strong>her own horse<\/strong>. So, she decided to start searching for one. She first looked at horses owned by Selle Fran\u00e7ais but had no success.<br><br>As a <strong>fan of eventing,<\/strong> she kept a close eye on leading riders such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxpitteventing.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">William Fox-Pitt<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fei.org\/athlete\/10023066\/LOISEAU-Clara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clara Loiseau <\/a>who made their names in top events riding ex-racehorses.<br>That was when her web search led her to <strong>retrained horses<\/strong> <strong>and Francis instantly became her favourite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feu Francis, better known as &#8220;Francis&#8221; is <strong>an AQPS<\/strong> (non-thoroughbred) and was born in 2015. Coached for <strong>steeplechasing<\/strong>, Feu Francis ran in four races under his trainers, Camille and Philippe Peltier before being transferred to a s<strong>pecialist facility<\/strong> for retraining ex-racehorses.<br><br>A few days later, Julie set out to meet her <strong>on-screen fixation<\/strong> and this quickly became <strong>love at first sight.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image00004-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"Julie et Francis\" class=\"wp-image-110515\" style=\"width:757px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image00004-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image00004-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image00004-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image00004-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/migration.antares-sellier.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image00004.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>\u00a9<\/strong>&nbsp;Julie Gaudelheid<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was instantly attracted by his lovely face and fine features&#8221;, confirms Julie.<br><br>After a couple of test rides and visit to the vet, Julie and Feu Francis&#8217; adventure together began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before becoming the triumphant duo they are today, they spent some time <strong>getting to know each other<\/strong>. Julie gave Feu Francis time to <strong>lose his inhibitions<\/strong> and for her to take stock of parts of his <strong>past life.<\/strong><br>Gradually, <strong>a team<\/strong> formed around them including a farrier, a vet, physiotherapist to name just a few.
